TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta:The 100th birthday of Soekarno, Indonesia’s first president and founding father, will be commemorated by a people party on June 6, 2001 at Senayan Stadium, Jakarta. Art and cultural night to commemorate Soekarno, popularly called as Bung Karno, will also be held at Jakarta Convention Center. Soedidarto, committee chairman of the commemoration, made this announcement following his meeting with President Abdurrahman Wahid at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta today, January 18. President Wahid will be the committee patron.
Soedidarto said the serial event would be started on February 2001 by holding seminars at 12 universities across Indonesia and launching books on Soekarnoism and commentaries on Soekarno. Soekarno’s works and collections will also be displayed for 15 days at Jakarta Convention Center starting from June 1, 2001.
Soekarno’s eldest son, Guntur Soekarnoputra, his wife, Heni—committee advisor--and Levana, the widow of Soekarno’s son Taufan Soekarnoputra attended the meeting. Guntur who looked calm gave little comments on press’ questions. He just smiled and let Soedidarto answer the questions.
Instead, he was more enthusiastically commenting on the changes at the Merdeka Palace, where he used to live in his childhood. “It was a vast grass field where I used my road circuit,” he said pointing to the Palace backyard.
The east wing of Merdeka Palace was Guntur’s favorite room. “My room was on that side,” he said stepping out the Palace’s yard.
